Riley Chaffee 500cc Winner, Dick Lamotte Tops the 600's

Posted 2017-07-10 at 23:15

The O'Reilly Auto Parts Granite State Mini Sprint Club returned to The Bear Ridge Speedway Saturday, July 8th with a strong field of cars. The program was delayed by nearly 2 hours by rain and the result was a lightning fast track. It was hard to tell if it was the fast track or the full Moon, but there were more incidents than usual.

As is customary the 500cc Feature was first. Trouble started before the green even flew as an incident on the backstretch eliminated the #6 of Ken Stridsburg, the #48 of Ed Vickery and the #42 of Ryan Farwell. When the green finally flew the #17 Matt Calley jumped into the lead from the outside Pole position with the #60 of Kyle Pittman claiming the 2nd spot. The yellow flew with 6 laps in the books for Will Pinkham Jr who was facing the wrong way at the exit of turn 4. Kyle Pittman bolted into the lead on the restart but the green didn't stay out long as one lap later the #13 of Andrew Martel shut down in turn 1, bringing out another yellow. While under caution the #18 of Adam Cunningham also shut down and was pushed to the pits. At this point race control called for single file restarts and when racing resumed Pittman once again was in control. One lap later yet another yellow appeared with the #96 of Matthew Collins dead on the track. When racing resumed Pittman was in control. When the crossed flags flew for halfway it was Kyle Pittman leading with Riley Chaffee moving into 2nd and Matt Calley 3rd. Two laps later the caution came out again, this time for a tangle coming out of turn 2 involving the #71 of Owen Carbee and the #08 of Logan Osmer. When racing resumed there were only 6 cars left on the track with the #51 of Riley Chaffee taking the lead on the restart. The race went green the rest of the way with Riley Chaffee picking up the win. Kyle Pittman was 2nd with Matt Calley 3rd. Owen Carbee and the #45 of Eric Relation completed the top 5.

The 600cc Feature event was calmer than the 500cc with the caution only flying twice. Dick Lamotte in his #18 took control at the outset of the race and led the entire distance to take the win. He first fought off the challenges of the #83 of John Mills, then Drew Eldridge in the #7 made a brief challenge for the lead. Later in the event the #14 of Zach Herbert pulled alongside Lamotte but couldn't complete the pass. When the final caution flew for a spinning Eldridge, Herbert headed to the pits with problems. The #20 of Tony Shaw inherited 2nd at this point with John Mills, who nearly spun out earlier in the event working his way back to 3rd. that is how the running order remained the rest of the race with Lamotte taking the win, Shaw 2nd and Mills 3rd. Eldridge came back to finish 4th with Kyle Pittman in the #9 completing the top 5.

Heat Race wins went to Ken Stridsburg and Kyle Pittman in the 500cc's with John Mills winning the 600cc Heat.

The next event on the calendar for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Granite State Mini Sprints is this Friday, July 14th, at The Legion Speedway in Wentworth, NH.
