Matt Calley and Tom Chaffee500cc Winners, Zach Herbert Sweeps the 600's in Len West Memorial Weekend

Posted 2018-07-18 at 19:50

It was the Len West Memorial Weekend for the Advanced Auto Parts Granite State Mini Sprints with events Friday night, July 13th at The Legion Speedway and Saturday night July 14th at The Bear Ridge speedway.

Friday Night at the Legion Speedway When the starter unfurled the Green Flag in the 500cc Main Event Brandon Caron in the #98 jumped to the lead from the outside pole position. The caution flew with just two laps complete for the #12 of Carson Williams, who coasted to a stop. When racing resumed the #10 of Rich Gilpatrick got a great jump and flew to the lead after restarting fifth. The yellow appeared once again just a lap later, again for the Carson Williams machine who was encountering carburetor problems. When the green flew again Gilpatrick maintained the lead with the #88 of Ed Vickery second and Brandon Caron third. The running order remained the same until lap eight when Brandon Caron took a wild ride, flipping out of turn four, Eric Relation in the #45 was involved as well. Once again the green only stayed out for a lap when racing resumed, this time the #24 of Joe Kemp and the #51 of Riley Chaffee caused the yellow. At the same time the #13 of Terry Balla spun wildly to the infield off the backstretch, a result of a bunch of broken suspension parts in the rear after getting whacked by another car bouncing off the backstretch wall. Gilpatrick maintained the lead on the restart but Ed Vickery immediately started to apply pressure for the top spot and made the pass for the lead two laps later. His lead only lasted two laps before the #17 of Matt Calley went from third to first in a single lap. Two laps later the caution flew yet again, this time for a multi car tangle at the exit of turn four that involved the #96 of Rob Williams, the #5 of William Pinkham Jr, the #23 of Billy Black, Joe Kemp and Eric Relation with Pinkham Jr, Relation and Williams all done for the evening. Gilpatrick got the jump on the restart and once again assumed the lead but just a lap later Calley once took back the top spot, leading the rest of the way to take the win. Riley Chaffee made a late race charge to finish second with Ed Vickery third. Rich Gilpatrick and Keisha Boissoneau in the #70 completed the top five.

The 600cc Main Event at Legion Speedway found the #00 of Bradley Osgood fire from the pole and lead the first three laps before Drew Eldridge in the #7 flew to the lead and started to pull away from the field, at the same time the #14 of Zach Herbert took the second spot, but couldn't gain on Eldridge. The first caution of the night for the 600's flew with eight laps complete for the #17 of Tyler Jones, who spun in turn three. When the race restarted before a lap could be complete the #78 of Jordan Eldridge had problems in turn two. When the green reappeared the running order stayed the same with Drew Eldridge building a comfortable lead on Herbert and the #29 of Mark Wiggett running third. The caution flew for the last time with just two laps remaining. This turned out to be a disaster for Drew Eldridge as on the restart he did not come up to speed, this allowed Zach Herbert to take the lead and run to the Victory. Tyler Jones made a last lap move to claim second with Mark Wiggett third. Drew Eldridge finished fourth with what was later to be determined a sick motor and Adam Cunningham in the #81 completed the top five.

Friday Heat race winners were Will Pinkham Jr and Tom Chaffee in the 500cc’s with Bradley Osgood and Mark Wiggett winning the 600cc qualifiers.

Saturday night at The Bear Ridge Speedway the 500cc Main Event was totally the opposite of the caution filled, high attrition event from the night before as the race went green to checkers without a caution. The #10 if Rich Gilpatrick bolted into the lead at the onset of the event and led the first four laps before multi time Feature winner Tom Chaffee in the #1 took the lead after starting ninth on the field. Gilpatrick was immediately challenged for second by the #24 of Joe Kemp, who after battling with Gilpatrick for a few laps took over the second spot. By this time Tom Chaffee had built a rather large lead. Shortly after Kemp took second, the #51 of Riley Chaffee moved into the third spot and that is the way they remained for the duration of the race. At the Checkers it was Tom Chaffee taking the win, his third of the season. Joe Kemp finished second with Riley Chaffee third. Matt Calley in the #17 finished fourth after starting tenth with Eric Relation in the #45 fifth after starting scratch on the field.

The 600cc Main event Saturday night saw Adam Cunningham in his #81 take the lead from the outside pole position when the green flew with Drew Eldridge in the #7 second. By lap three the #14 of Zach Herbert had moved to third after starting last on the field and started to pressure Drew Eldridge for second, eventually taking the spot on lap six. Just two laps later Herbert also blasted by Cunningham to take the lead. The running order remained the same until the only caution of the race came out with twelve laps in the books for Mark Wiggett in the #29, who spun in turn two. On the restart Cunningham had problems and this moved Drew Eldridge to second and Tony Shaw in the #20 to third. Mark Wiggett was working his way back through the field after restarting in the rear and passed Shaw for third with three laps left in the event. At the Checkers it was Zach Herbert sweeping the weekend with the win, giving him four wins this season. Drew Eldridge was second with Mark Wiggett third, Tony Shaw was fourth with the #17 of Tyler Jones fifth.

Saturday Heat race winners were Rich Gilpatrick and Joe Kemp in the 500cc class with Zach Herbert winning the 600cc Heat.
