Tom Chaffee Wins Again in the 500cc's, Drew Eldridge Dominates 600's

Posted 2018-06-18 at 21:22

Friday June 15th The Legion Speedway was the sight for race number four on the season for the Advance Auto Parts Granite State Mini Sprint Club.

As usual the 500cc Main Event was first up with the #17, tonight being driven by Eddie Puffinbuger and the #88 of Ed Vickery comprising the front row. When the green dropped Vickery bolted into the lead with Puffinburger settling into second while a wild four wide scramble occurred further back in the pack. As has been the case most of the season the #1 of Tom Chaffee was on a rail. He started in the twelfth position and had flown to third by the second lap. Tom Chaffee worked over Puffinburger for a few laps before taking the second position. Meanwhile Riley Chaffee in is #51 was also on the move arriving in third with eight laps complete. Vickery initially built a large lead but Tom Chaffee slowly reeled him in, bolting into the top spot on lap eleven, just before the only caution of the event flew. On the restart Riley Chaffee took second brought the #54 of William Pinkham SR to third with him, dropping Vickery to fourth. As the laps clicked off the top three remained the same and at the checkers it was Tom Chaffee taking the win, his second of the season. Riley Chaffee crossed the line second with William Pinkham SR third. The #96 of Matt Collins was fourth and Eric Relation in the #45 completed the top five. This was the third consecutive race that the father son duo of Tom and Riley Chaffee finished in the top three.

Dick Lamotte in the #18 sat on the pole for the 600cc event with Drew Eldridge in the #7 starting to his outside. Eldridge powered into the lead shortly after the race started with Lamotte second. As the race progressed Eldridge continued to increase his lead and on lap five the #14 of Zach Herbert slipped into second and set his sights on the high flying Eldridge while the #29 of Mark Wiggett started to challenge Lamotte for third. The duo had a prolonged battle that ended when they came together in turns three and four with Lamotte hitting the outside wall hard, causing the red to come out. Lamotte was OK and when racing resumed there was just three laps remaining. Herbert tried to challenge Eldridge for the lead but couldn’t complete the pass. At the checkers it was Drew Eldridge with the win, Zach Herbert second with Tyler Jones in the #17 third. Mark Wiggett and the #19 of Willy Ostertag rounded out the top five.

Heat Race wins went to Tom Chaffee and Ed Vickery in the 500cc's with Zach Herbert winning the 600cc Heat.

A post race cookout was held and all the competitors graduating in 2018 were recognized.
